What's the wallpaper on your phone and/or computer?
Our three dogs ("mine" plus "hers". My wife has just her dog on her wallpaper, as it's unclear how fond she is of my two min pins. We have a baby now, but he hasn't so far made the wallpaper cut.
When you walk into a bar, what do you typically order?
I rarely walk into bars any more. Migraine enablers. But a beer, usually shitty, bottled, and light,…or if I'm feeling more adventurous a moscow mule, as i am ginger obsessed.
What's the one word you are guilty of using too often?
Currently it's "conflate."
What is the last thing you searched for on Google?
How to spell Vashti Bunyan (see below)
Who is the last person that called or texted you?
I want to say Steven Drozd of Flaming Lips because that's a much cooler answer than my publicist (no offense). Steven is a distant 4th on the lineup today. My lawyer was the last to call. It's been an ugly, parodically unsavory, Hollywood day.
What was the last awkward situation you were in and how did you handle it?
I'm in it. Well-ish to poor. We've become too reliant upon email to sort out our differences but perhaps this harkens back to its antiquated equivalent when we had no choice but to communicate with the written word with those who weren't across the street or the cave next door. It's difficult not to be impulsive. Conversely, it's difficult to resist spending your wee hours blindly editing that which may have been just as easily, albeit perhaps less articulately, communicated on the phone or in person. It's difficult to know when the correspondence is complete, if even the one or the other party is officially/literally the last person to have communicated. A lack of response can certainly be interpreted as a response, often the most cogent. It's an echo chamber. A feedback loop. How's your day?
When is the last time you went to a theater?
In NYC, a couple months ago, my father visited us (I was there working for 3 months), and we went to see Larry David's play. It's one of maybe 3 or so times we've been out without our 7 month old son. It felt wicked, a little bizarre. Oh, I might have gone to BAM since then o see Marc Maron interview Terry Gross, maybe I'll include that self-portrait. Sorry for the pretension, still can't bring myself to say "s---fie." Or "puffy" for that matter.
What TV show should everyone be watching?
Uh, I don't know, I'm not good with the tv questions, not that I'm a snob about it, just I'm very late or often entirely absent from the party that most people are excited about. I love Louie. He can do very little wrong in my book on that show. Also since the kid we watch way less tv, which has been kind of nice. But we also have no idea what is going on in the world. I used to watch the MSNBC nightly line-up on a loop, it was like easy lefy listening, I'd write songs, record them even with the MSNBC loop in the background. I was starstruck when "i" was fake on Maddow's show in a scene from The Jim Gaffigan Show and sad I wasn't really on the show — where I'd be so far out of my depth I'd need a snorkel.
And what is your TV guilty pleasure?
If you had asked me a few years ago, you would have gotten a more savory response. I was heavy into ANTM. Like HEAVY. Lost track of how many cycles. Also So You Think You Can Dance .actually didn't feel guilty about the latter, actually think that's quite a good show. I don't' know, Shark Tank? Oh and 3:30am reruns of The Steve Harvey Show. Kind of obsessed.
What's the first CD you bought?
Don't recall. My mom was an early adopter and I remember the first CD I stole or that became the touchstone for my obsession with jazz. A John Coltrane / Cannonball Adderly record called "The Dreamweavers." Safe to assume, that first (early summer, late spring?) listen changed my life in a way. Hooked me in deep. Probably got me smoking. Not a good thing, but I seemed incapable of enjoying one without the other. Since I quit smoking a few years ago I find myself listening to far more podcasts than music. And I drink less (see above). I'm a a quitter.
What is the one food you cannot resist?
sushi/mexican/chinese/thai is that one?
What music are you currently listening to?
Well we have a baby, did I mention that? He hates being in the car, he hates sleeping, kind of like his old man. But he loves Vashti Bunyan, and finds it a source of solace, as do I, so hard to begrudge him that. Her first record is on A LOT.
What movie makes you laugh the most?
Hmmm, dead inside. Trying to think. When I was a kid it was Airplane and just about any Woody Allen movie. I've gotta get back to you, I'm more concerned that I can't remember the last time I laughed.
What drives you absolutely crazy?
Did you mean, "what doesn't drive you crazy?"
What's your favorite day of the year?
I have bad associations with nearly all of them, but I'll go with my son's birthday, November 28th, albeit having only experience of it as a favorite day just last year, but hard to imagine that will ever change.
What was your first online screen name?
sheeplover
What's your favorite emoji?
the poop obviously. IBS you not.
Pick one: Kittens or puppies?
Puppies.
New York or Los Angeles?
LA.
Comedy or drama?
Dramedy. Okay drama.
Bacon or Nutella?
Bacon.
Coffee or tea?
Tea.
'80s or '90s?
'90s, I was more pubescent — though just as miserable.
Britney or Christina?
Chrisitina.
NSYNC or BSB?
I don't know the difference.
Beyonce or Rihanna?
Rihanna lived within spitting distance of our house, paparazzi jamming up the street, sketchy security guys sleeping in shitty cars in the cul de sac (used to call ADT all the time, assuming they were stalking the striking half-Jewish character actor in the house above them), and eventually one of the paps slammed into my wife's car. So….Beyonce.
And finally: tell us a secret.
Marc Maron is going to interview the president. It was once a secret, so that counts no? He told me, I was sworn to secrecy, then totally forgot. I'm the best person to confide in, because I'm so self-absorbed I don't remember anybody else's shit.
Catch Adam in No Way Jose — out on DVD tomorrow, July 7th — and in The Jim Gaffigan show on TV Land.
